On Saturday this weekend, my friends and I decided to escape Vienna for a day and explore a bit of Austria. Since this year is probably my last full year living in Vienna, I really made it my mission to explore as much as I can, in and outside Vienna. I live in Vienna for almost four years now, but every time my friends and I wanted to go on vacation, we never thought of going to another area, district or city in Austria, but to get away as far as we can. Also, the last years of Medical school were so intense that during the semester, there was literally no time to do trips like that, even if they’d be day trips. But this year, we wanted to change our perspectives and do as much as we can here.
The first place we visited was Krems. Krems is a small city in Lower Austria and it took us about an hour to get there via train. We were a group of 9 people, so we split the group in one taking the car, the other one taking the train. The train ride was absolutely fine! We admired the landscapes passing by, ate our second breakfast, played little games and laughed about everything and nothing.
As you can probably tell, the weather was amazing. It was super hot, but bearable and really dry. We were lucky to see some blooming trees in Krems as well. We had a hour to explore before our bus came for our next destination, so we couldn’t see everything but I feel like we got a pretty descent sense for the small city of Krems. The city reminded me of a mixture of a small Vienna and an Italien city and we enjoyed walking around a lot.
We took a bus to Angern b. Krems, which is an area of Krems, but a little bit further away from the city. We heard that there would be a lovely hiking route through an apricot landscape. Arriving at the Marillenweg, we met up with the other half of our group and starting hiking. The hiking route was beautiful, very peaceful and quiet, the sun was shining super strong and besides a small family, there was nobody else walking, so we had a pretty relaxing walk in pure nature.
After walking for almost two hours, we head to our final destination, Melk city. Melk is another city in Lower Austria and pretty close to Vienna as well. We took the train again and had a stop in St. Pölten, where we missed our connecting train. Instead of arriving in Melk straight away, we had a one hour explore in St. Pölten, were we got a delicious frozen yogurt and walked through the small streets. An hour passed by so fast and a few minutes later, we arrived in Melk. The other (car) group already waited there, so we met up and went to Stift Melk, which is the abbey of Melk city. We took the last tour of the day and learned about the history of the abbey, the usage of it in the present, the funding and so much more. It was a pretty interesting tour and a whole other world!
We weren’t allowed to take any photos inside the abbey, but one of the last stops of our tour included going on a balcony to enjoy this breathtaking view over the city!
Exhausted but happy and pretty hungry, we decided to have a dinner together before we head back to Vienna. We went to Rathauskeller, which is an Austrian Restaurant serving Austrian, german and Hungary food. I went for the deer stew with dumplings while most of use chose a schnitzle and potato dish! It was pretty good and a nice end of our day trip.
We arrived in Vienna at around 9 pm after having the funniest train ride back. I was exhausted, but weirdly, I could’t sleep right away as I had all this impressions of the day floating in my mind. We decided to plan another little trip in the near future and until then, study has hard as we can, getting everything done and also, exploring more Vienna of course. I already have a little bucket list of what I want to see before I move countries again in next January, and I’m pretty excited to work my way through it with the best people on my side!
My Sunday is going to be a full study for USMLE-Step 1, working on my diploma thesis, going to the hospital to do an ultrasound examination on one of my friends as a practice for my diploma and hopefully, working-out kinda day!
I hope you had a great weekend so far! What have you guys been up to?
